The Pompadour
A pompadour is a type of hairstyle that became popular with men in the 1950’s, but actually dates back further to Madame de Pompadour, the chief mistress of Louis XV from the 1700s. Famous figures such as James Dean and Elvis Presley helped to make the style more mainstream and gave this older style a modern flash of flair. In recent years the style has seen a resurgence and people are looking for new and innovative twists on this classic style!

The pompadour is a real classic, with the male style stemming from the 50’s and 60’s, but really coming into their own in the 80’s. You’ll need longer hair on top and shorter hair on the back and sides. This cut is perfect for customers wanting to maintain a clean and professional look whilst also having a cool style.
The short pompadour is perfect for those who want to rock the pomp without committing to the traditional length and volume of the cut. The good news is that you can still get that look with shorter hair. Short pompadours are a neat yet striking style that can suit almost any situation. For a more modern interpretation of a short pompadour, style your hair from your temple near the part line. For the neatest look, opt for a strong-hold wet-finish hair product.
To cut the back and sides:
- Create 2 deep side parts that join in a V in the back of the head
- Shave/cut just under the parts using clippers and a fine-toothed comb
- Blend the hairline up to the bottom of the baseline
- Clean up the edges and perimeter with careful freehand scissor cutting
- Blend the sides and back with a fine toothed comb and scissors
To cut the top:
- Un-clip the hair and comb a 1 inch thick layer towards the back
- Trim the hair to match the bottom of the baseline
- Grab a section of hair from the centre part, running from back-to-front
- Slide your fingers to where you want to cut, then cut the hair off
- Continue to cut sections of hair until you reach the forehead
- Repeat the process on the sides of the top section, if needed
- Even out the hair along the front hairline
- Comb the sides down and trim them so that they match the baseline.
